Not in Amrika anymore

Very much like the defeat in the Capital in February, a victory or defeat for the BJP in Bihar will not affect either Modi’s hold on his office or destabilise his government. Yet, a victory is essential to ensure that his position does not get undermined within the phalanx of organisations presided over by the RSS.

The victory will also demonstrate the ease with which the BJP will be able to approach future elections. The verdict in Bihar will determine if Modi’s finest hour is already past or yet to come.
In contrast, Nitish Kumar can sink no lower than last year when his party established leadings in just 18 assembly segments during the parliamentary poll and won a paltry two Lok Sabha seats. Rare is an incumbent who suffers such a washout yet manages to stage a comeback.

Compared to the JD(U)-RJD-Congress grand alliance, the BJP’s sole gain since last year has been Jitan Ram Manjhi, whose capacity to win seats and transfer loyalists’ votes is indeterminate. The cumulative vote share that the Nitish-Lalu duo coupled with the Congress bring together on a platform makes matters further difficult for BJP. more
