I was amused to read  ‘How History was Made up at Nalanda’ by Arun Shourie who has dished out to readers his ignorance masquerading as knowledge –  reason enough to have pity on him and sympathy for his readers! Since he has referred to me by name and has  charged  me with fudging evidence to distort the historical narrative of the destruction of  the ancient Nalandamahavihar,  I consider it necessary to rebut his allegations and set the record straight instead of ignoring his balderdash. more

Bihar's ancient university returns to life

The Government has sanctioned Rs.2727.10 crore to the University during its establishment phase from 2010-11 to 2021-22. The estimated capital cost of the project is Rs.1749.65 crore.  The recurring expenditure projected from 2014-15 onwards is Rs.977.45 crore.  Funds will be allocated from External Affairs Ministry’s Plan Budget as per annual funding requirements. more

With 3% of the total geographical area of India and 9% of its total population, Bihar is the most densely populated state in the country. It is also one of the poorest and backward states in India. Before the British came, Bihar was one of the most prosperous regions in the country. However, during the British period, it underwent a radical transformation (thanks to the 1793 Permanent Settlement and the other policies that followed), turning into a poor agricultural state with a very exploitative agrarian structure that became a great impediment to agrarian reform. Efforts to develop the state in later years were not very successful and it continued to remain one of the most backward, with rising caste and class tensions, criminalisation, non-governance, and poor delivery mechanisms. Over the last six to seven years, the image of the state has changed for the better, thanks to a turnaround in the growth rate and significant improvement in law and order. more
